I have a 1992 Buick Skylark,6 cylinder Automatic, w/Power Steering, APS brakes, apx.90,000+ miles. This summer, my mechanic 'bypassed' the stove core as it was leak so bad.I presently have to Replace it.I don't come up with it is repairable as the mechanic has tried everthing. How big of a opportunity is this ( Can a 'friend' do it easily?) and in the order of what will it cost? Im Broke and freezing!
Merry Christmas?
Answers: It's a fairly unproblematic job for the experienced and routinely inclined person. Unfortunately, it usually involves removal of segment of the lower part of the dashboard. The oven core part itself should cost you between $32 and $50 dollars. At www.partsamerica.com, which is Checker, Schucks and Kragen stores, adjectives the heater cores include a lifetime warranty for that price. I would not recommend reuse of an weak one. If you haven't already purchased one, I recommend a Haynes manual for step-by-step instructions, which will be for the GM N-Body (Buick Skylark/Pontiac Grand Am/Olds Achieva). Sometimes the library will own these Haynes manuals or Chilton manual for check out. You can read the full procedure before you start to determine your best course of doings.
This is a job that will involve working both beneath the hood and inside the interior, which is why it's usually expensive. Parts cost next to nought for most car repairs, but beside labor rates hitting 60 - 100 per hour, it's easy to see why it costs so much.
This living is estimated at between 2 and 5 hours and the parts needed would be a phillips and standard screw driver (short handle preferred) as ably as a set of metric socket wrenches and a paint scraper or similar tool to pop off the clips on the lower dashboard panel as well as anti-freeze to compress the cooling system after the job is complete.
I replaced the radiator core on my 1992 Saturn about 5 years ago and it be inexpensive and relatively easy. It did give somebody a lift about 2 hours. I consider myself solely slightly mechanically inclinded.
This is not an jammy fix. I'm so sorry but you sure are cute.
