I have been told not to use this funtion because it is complex on the front end. I live in Alaska and travel 200 miles to the grocery store and resembling to have it in auto. Also it is commonly 30 or 40 below 0. does this matter.
probably no harm, but hang on to it in 2wd and shift when you need it
Answers: You can keep it contained by "Auto 4x4" all the time if you wish. These trucks today are pretty calorific duty & are tested under extremes most of us don't go through. If you used it adjectives the time your fuel mileage would suffer a bit & your tires would wear a little quicker, other than that you would be fine. Use your 4x4 whenever you want, just don't forget to service the differentials & the transfercase as recommended. This truck takes a special transfercase fluid, ONLY USE "Auto-Trac" (a blue synthetic fluid). The front & backside diff's take synthetic gear lube as well, 75w90, i believe.
PS-When surrounded by 4wd just keep the trans contained by D & not OD, that's your only concern.
