Answers:    Refer to the owners manual for your specific vehicle, of course. That anyone said, in particularly poor conditions some manufacturer recommend that a vehicles overdrive feature be defeated by select D3 or whatever the vehicle has as the hollow out preceding the standard D . What that does is shift normally though the speeds but does not shift into overdrive. The overdrive feature is at hand to improve gas mil age. It basically puts the drive rank into a taller gear on the top and holds it there a bit longer before downshifting.

On dependable vehicles this can cause issues on steep terrain, while pulling a load or in slippery conditions. I, intuitively have driven all kind of vehicles in adjectives kinds of conditions and never had a problem using the regular D for Drive. While I can catch sight of the issues listed above they are pretty minor and barely detectable bar when towing. Only while towing a trailer up and down hills did I ever notice the engine struggling within the overdrive setting. That is the only time I needed to select the other D3 notch.
