Misfires/Valve Cover Gasket?

I have a 97 Chrysler Town and Country with rather under 94,000 miles. I took it into the shop because the "Service" light come on. They called back and said that 2 of the cylinders are misfiring and the Valve Cover Gasket is rotted and leak oil and should be replaced. (I put in synthetic grease! Could that have caused the problem?) The shop told me that the misfiring should be deal with but the Gasket could wait for a few weeks. I don't reckon I could deal with the misfiring of the cylinders but could I do the Valve Cover Gasket? I don't enjoy that much experience with cars but I would like to try this. I enjoy the tools and time. Is getting a Haynes or Chilton manual enough? Should I own somebody who knows what they are doing help me? Is it something trouble-free for a beginner to do?

Also they quoted $450 for the Cylinder Misfires and $320 for the Valve Cover Gasket. Is that a fair estimate?

Thanks

Answers:    if its a 6 cyl it will involve removing the intake plenum to access flipside valve cover,if you have the leniency for it you should be able to do it,also while the plenum is off shifting the spark plugs in the rear, would be a time depositor since they will be easy to get to them next to the plenum removed,as for the misfire what parts were recommended,i don't think the type of grease you used would affect your gaskets,if its a 4cyl your valve cover gasket could be leaking grease into the spark plug tubes causing your misfire.but your priority should be addressing the misfire problem first, you could violate your catalytic converter and those items cost from $400.00 to$ 800.00.
