It does sound close to a fuel pump problem. I have a 1991 Chevy Caprice station wagon doing impossible to tell apart thing, but I believe my transmission is going out. If it is the pump, though, try standard lamp maintainence such as changing the fuel filter and running fuel injector/carborator cleaner through your tank. Also, you can amendment the tranny filter and fluid. It might not last forever, but your car will thank you and you may receive a little more life out of her.

Answers:    If the motor hesitates or stalls when accelerate or driving at higher rpms it is likely the fuel pump failing. Put the coup¨¦ in it's lowest gear and accelerate at a swiftly pace. If the motor cuts out back bad the gas and coast for 10 seconds and then push the pedal to the floor. If the motor runs OK for 5 to ten second and starts to hesitate or cut out again it's the fuel pump. Coasting lets the lacklustre pump fill the carb bowl which empties right away when accelerate because the pump can't keep up due to the bad diaphragm. It will backfire and leave you stranded.
