I have a 95 Chevy Tahoe 4WD 5.7L V8 that makes a discouraging squealing noise from the serpentine belt whenever it is humid outside.
Is there anyway to serene the belt short of replacing it?
Does this mean it should be replaced?
If it does need to be replaced, it looks close to it would be a pretty easy job for a condition amatuer like myself to perform; is it within fact easy adequate for a non-mechanic to do?
Thanks.
You might need a new belt or a tensioner, and yes a non-mechanic can do this next to the right tools
Answers: As the belt gets old... it absorb moisture (that's how they end up dry rotting) The cords in the belt suck up the moisture and burns rotten as the belt heats up.
Very easy to do... newly make sure you draw a little picture that shows the belt routing VERY IMPORTANT... (it's smooth to confuse) and duplicate that putting it back on.
Install a 3/8 inch drive wrench (ratchet) on the tensioner arm (the square hole) and rotate the arm counterclockwise to loosen the belt tension. Remove the belt... and simply reroute the unmarked belt.
Good Luck!

if the belt is showing large cracks u should indeed replace it .as for the squeel try sprying a little w-d 40 on it merely a very little if the squeel goes away and comes put a bet on after a little driving then budge ahead end replace it .its very unforced to replace and y also have a map of the belt routing on your radiator cowl to show u exactly how to do this simple task. if u dont want to do it yourself a tech. will usually do it for u for no charge if u buy the belt from them.consequently buy him lunchThe A/C Compressor Clutch on my 1999...
