Drive or over drive?

My friend just told me you should always drive surrounded by over drive.Ok,to me this sounds nuts, why have drive then?I other thought over drive was for going up steep hills and driving on rime and stuff. Please enlighten me,is he nuts or what? And what kind of sprain could be done by just using over drive,or am I nuts?Actually I am nuts but thats beside the point. Thanks in finance for you answers.

Overdrive is like an extra gear so the engine turns more slowly at highway speeds to increase fuel economy.

I ALWAYS drive in OD unless I'm pulling a trailer beside my truck.

Early manual automotive transmissions were fixed to three or sometimes four speeds, with only the most sophisticated anyone five speeds. This left an unfulfilled need for a difficult gear ratio for highway cruising, which was filled by the postscript of separate overdrive units. However, automotive manual transmissions manufactured since the 1980s tend to include a larger inspection of gear ratios than before, the unmatched of which is usually greater than 1:1. This trend has rendered the overdrive a complex and obsolete solution to cutback gearing in automobiles, and very few cars are fitted near them today, although they still appear on large trucks, where more gear ratio are always in emergency.
I was always told you drive surrounded by drive and use overdrive for steep hills or when you get stuck within the snow. Kind of like when you are in a stick you would down shift for more torke.(sorry if i spelled torke wrong.)

Newer automatic transmissions are computer controlled and the computer make the decision to be or not to be in over drive. In most of the newer transmissions the overdrive is in truth a converter lock-up. This takes place in the nouns and is fluid pressure controlled by solenoids and electromagnetic clutches, according to valve body position I.E.. OD,D,3,2,1, Driving in overdrive give you the best fuel economy and lets the computer do the thinking.
your friend is right. overdrive should be used most of the time. reg. drive is for when overdrive keep kicking in and out, then you use reg. drive, similar to driving in the country for example.driving in overdrive let the tranny pick which gear it wants to be in. i use overdrive adjectives the time, unless its in a situation to where i own to use reg. drive.

Answers:    overdrive is for cruising at speed. if speed is enough and you have the power, it can be used uphill, no problem downhill unless speed restriction is req'd. Motors in OD should not be labouring at low rpm. Automatics should not be within OD whilst the torque converter is has sustained slipage. Heavy payloads & trailers make for soaring slipage on automatics-leading towards overheating transmissions and radiators, with the usual damages resulting. OD is NOT a dual ratio like a 4WD or a truck, it is simply a gear (or gears) which allows the output shaft on the nouns to turn faster than the input shaft. It is a torque reducer and should not be used off road because you'll be going too fast, ditto surrounded by snow. Care must be used to use it uphill, as the loads on the motor are much greater than in a lower gear, and slogging a motor is bad for it. It can let go fuel on the flat and downhill, less so uphill, I really wonder what palnet some of your advisers above are on, as they don't seem to be to know what they're talking about.
