In any case next to a timing belt or chain, and no matter how tons cams, you DO NOT wait until it screws up. In every travel case, this would fall under preventive keeping.

It can be forgiving in some cars, but you're still going to have the motor die for good in traffic. Timing belts don't gradually break. They don't know how to do that.
The belt drives the camshaft, it does not control the ignition timing directly. The computer controls that, and what type of spark timing system it have - which still requires good plugs, wires, and clean gas to burn.

If it's misfiring, it may involve service or just has like mad of water in the gas - which can come from simple condensate from a suddenly melt day. Keep it tuned up as required, and fill the cistern when needed - short fill ups increase water surrounded by the gas. Use gasahol and you'll never need to buy an additive that only just puts in more alcohol - or look like your starting a meth lab!

If you wait for the timing belt to move about your engine will need to be replaced. Not one of those things you want to wait on.
It would be smart to enjoy it done at the manufacturers recommended time, even if it's not causing a problem, because if you linger until there's a problem it could be a very expensive problem you would damage the internal engine components such as valve, that's why they call it preventive maintenance. Hope this help and good luck. A dohc is a dual overhead cam

Follow the manufacturers recommendation! Timing belts control the crack and closing of your engines valves, and coordinate them with the travel of the pistons,so that the valve do not strike the piston tops, which bends the valves and may destroy the pistons too.Timing belts may wear satisfactory to self destruct or skip a tooth on their timing gears.and this can cause several hundred or even thousands of dollars of damage,so it is distinctly worthwhile to perform this job up to that time it causes symptoms that you would notice.

Answers:    Always do it at the recommended interval.

If the timing belt breaks, then a car beside an interference fit engine will require you get your entire engine replaced.
For the Galant,

If you have a DOHC, these engines are interference fit, and DEFINITELY rework out the belt when recommended.

If you have the SOHC version, most Mitsubishi SOHC engines are not interference fit engines, but varying it out before it breaks can prevent you from being stranded by the side of the road.

In the majority of cases, you won't see the motor miss timing until the timing belt breaks, and typically SOL.
