I bought a new dipstick for my bmw. And at the tail failure of it, there is a red plastic piece that appears to be attached to it. Am I supposed to insert it near this red piece on or off?
Answers: I'm not acquainted with the BMW dipstick, but on my MINI Cooper (also made by BMW) the dipstick have on one end a ring-shaped fiddle with, and on the other a narrow piece of plastic that have the oil horizontal markings on it. So I'd guess you should keep the red piece on; it's an essential part of a set of the dipstick.
Also, if you have the owner's booklet it may have a picture of how to read the dipstick that might confirm.
Failing adjectives else, ask the parts guy you bought it from for help!
