I have a 95 F-150 4x4 and I believe its a E40D tranny. It runs great. But when I go to help yourself to off I have to manually shift from 1st and so on. If I don't it seem like I'm holding my foot on the brake. I put my tester on it and it comes up with a shift solenoid circuit eccentricity. The problem is my Chilton book doesn't have the location of that solenoid anywhere. Is it internal or external
yes that solenoid is internal but there is two things you can try . first check the vacum modulatoron the tranny verbs the hose off if you have any fluid come out it is doomed to failure this will cause the tranny not to shif .now i would amend the tranny fluid and put a new screen surrounded by too. the cost of these two things will be about 60.00 if you do it yourself good luck. i hold the same truck
It's in the nouns. If you pull the pan it's accessable & you can do it yourself.
Answers: The shift solenoid(s) are inside the transmission for the E4OD. They are within the solenoid body and are not replaceable separately. The entire solenoid body would have to be replaced ($2-300). The problem you have tell me that you are getting a shift solenoid 1 failure. The fault does not necessarily denote the solenoid has failed. It could be a break surrounded by the wire harness for that solenoid, or a poor connection at the nouns. With that fault the trans would start in 4th gear. That is why it feel so sluggish. Pulling it down to M1 and shifting manually will give you a 2-3-4 shift. There is no vacuum control or modulator on this trans.

is the base of the shifter .
may be You'd spill some coffeee on it.
it work close to a switch.
(the shift solenoid in the "valves body",inside the tranny, is not prone to fail)
also check on the sensor (input shaft sensor) moved out side of the tranny near the bellhousing. may be deffective.(yes, outside the tranny)
