I have a 95 Chrysler Concorde. The A/C hasn't worked in years. I've be told that the compressor went bad. If I bought a used compressor on e-bay, could I install it myself and would it potential work again?
I can change the battery myself. And I figure out how to change the climate controls myself (it broke and I bought a new one on e-bay and fixed it myself). The merely reason I don't change my own grease is that its messy and I don't really have a place to do it.
Anyways, how bad could it be, its already be broken for years?!? I wouldn't suggest it. The EPA has rules against releasing the freon into the atmosphere. You will also need a set of gauge and a vacuum pump. Besides the tools that you need, you'll also need ot replace the receiver/dryer too, to hold moisture out of the system.

95 Chrysler doesn't have freon, it have refrigerant. I would never get a used compressor, that is close to getting a used belt or used fuel filter, it just makes no sense. What you obligation is an ac kit installed by a professional, that consists of a NEW compressor, expansion valve, reciever dryer, flush tackle, and oil. Figure on around 1200 bucks at a REAL shop installed with a one year warranty.

Answers: There is more to it than simply buying a used compressor and installing it. Once the compressor has been installed , the system have to be pressure tested for leaks (nitrogen) . Not something most people own available. Then if it passes , the system has to be vacuumed out to remove the nitrogen and any moisture that may be contained by the system. Then it has to be recharged to the proper volume ( in lbs ) of the proper refrigerant ( usually not available over the counter) With an ac recharge appliance , again not something you can just borrow as it cost more than the car itself. So to put it bluntly . NO you can not fix it yourself. You may be capable of change the compressor but that`s about it. After that ,you obligation the knowhow and equipment to finish the job. Sorry

I've looked into doing work on a/c systems and concluded that you obligation a lot of specialized tools and a knowledge of handling refrigerants such as reclaim and recycling and the equipment to do it with. There really is greatly more to it than it looks like. If you have an outdated R-12 system, that presents a whole new set of problems because they don't create R-12 anymore and if you can still find any it's EXPENSIVE! Converting R-12 to R-134a isn't that simple either because a lot of the refrigerant oil aren't compatable with each other or next to some of the compressors.
