Hello my car battery be flat and I took it out to charge it. I asked the garage and they said i shoud leave the battery contained by the car and hook it up to the charger to start the engine and then head off the engine running for 15 minutes, however the user manual says that the mobile should be taken out of the car to charge it. Whos right and what are the risks of hooking it up to the household mains and starting it up? thankfulness
if you leave it on the vehicle disconect terminals to charge but just putting it on charge wont know how to start engine till got good charge it might not be batery prob could be alternator appropriate luck
very well you don't hook it up to the mains, you use a battery charger.
disconnecting the battery-operated could cause problems with remote locking, alarms and coded stereo
i would charge it contained by the car for about an hour formerly trying to start then take the motor for a 5-10 mile drive.
the risks are that when you disconnect the charger from the battery you could get sparks and as the gasses given sour from a battery as it charges are explosive... but this risk is there even if you remove the mobile from the car.
just engineer sure you disconnect the charger from the mains before you disconnect it from the freestyle.
just read the lower answers, and would like to point out that yes the output of a mobile charger is about 16v -18v, but the output of the cars own charging sytem is also around 16v -18v so by this logic the vehicles own alternator is wounding the cars electronics whenever the engine is running.
Itake it your not completely thick as to try and charge a 12volt battery direct from 240 volts.Very precarious and will melt and probably explode the battery. If the battery-operated is flat without you knowingly draining it,this money a cell or cells have poor,so the best thing to do is buy a new one.Could also be your alternator not charging the mobile.Get your garage to do a check on the battery. In the mean time buy a set of Jump lead and connect to another car and then clutch your car for a good drive lacking heaters etc on to give it a good charge.
Answers: Your car manual steers you toward utter safety. They want the battery out of the vehicle because dead and low charged batteries discharge a significantly explosive gas through the top vent holes. If you happened to hook up the charger to the battery posts beside the charger on a spark may occur as you hook the alligator clips to the battery. The likelihood are extremely high that the battery will explode contained by your face, battery bitter and all. An explosion like this is unusual but at this point you don't actually know the voltage of your battery. The lower the voltage difficult levels of explosive gas. Higher voltage little or no gas is escaping.
The car company's don't want you to seriously hurt yourself or to wreckage the car in an explosion or start a fire.
With the battery-operated in or out of the car other hook the clamps on before turning on the charger. You'll also get a much better charge if you use a fully automatic battery-operated charger that turns it's self off when the battery is fully charged. I've other charged batteries (a)2 amps and leave the charger on over dark.
Learn to read your batteries state of charge by using an inexpensive volt meter. Radio Shack and Sears has impressively basic ones for $15.00. Simply turn the center switch on the volt meter to 20 volts and clamp the leads on the freestyle.
Note the voltage with the motor off on a cold morning previously you drive it. If it reads no less than 11.5 volts try recharge it.
I've seen 12 volt batteries drop to 10.5 volts from one running day to the next. 10.5 colts won't even carry a click from the solonoid When batteries are this bad, direct replacement is necessary.
How old is your battery-operated? An origional is good for 3-5 years if you're lucky. If not start shopping. Go for the best warranty and the most cold cranking amps at 0 degrees Farenheight.
Best of luck to ya,

I unhook the charger before I try and start the car. Once the mobile has enough liquid to start it, then the alternator will take over and charge it while it is running.
accurate luck.
They're both right...
Firstly, you should not attatch a mains battery charger to the freestyle whilst it is connected to the vehicle.
The alternator will charge the battery once the engine has started, you can any leave the battery whilst the saloon is idling in dull, or go for a drive, hopefully that will charge the battery. However if the battery-operated is dead, you'll be stuck when you turn the engine off subsequent time!
You can buy machines to start the car from a mains supply, however these are highly expensive. YOU CAN NOT start a car from a mains charger.

Andy
You should nick the battery out of the car to charge. Here is why...
1. The charger works at in the order of 16V to 18V. Your car works at about 13V to 14V. You could do some electrical problems due to the higher voltage.
2. During charging, the battery will vent gas. These gasses can be explosive. Look at the warning label on the mobile - it says right there.
3. With the charger you can donate it to trickle charge overnight. This will bring the battery back to full charge and you will minimize the ruin to the battery by letting it go flat.
AND... don't hook it up to the household D directly. Mains are at 110V AC. Your battery is 12V DC.
if you leave it on the vehicle disconect terminals to charge but just putting it on charge wont know how to start engine till got good charge it might not be batery prob could be alternator appropriate luck

"Manuel is Right" The Alternator is not Designed to Charge a Dead/Flat Battery, it's meant to Replenish & Maintain the Charge ia a Good Battery.
Battery should be Removed, Fully Charged then "Load Tested" for 15 Seconds at 50% of CCA and during the Test not to Drop Below 9.6 Volts showing you that the Battery can Take and Hold a Charge.
