Car broke down and have it towed to Chek Ups Plus Auto Service within Decatur Al.?

I had my saloon towed to Chek Ups Plus Auto Service and they quoted me 2500 dollars to fix it said it was the tensioner (SP?) its be in the shop a week very soon and was supposed to be arranged today. I've already spent 300 on a rental car, and when I go to pick it up today they told me it was worse next what they originally thought and I needed a new motor, they thought but wasn't sure they be going to check a bit further. They later call me and told me they talked to their boss and needed to keep my motor and call it even for the labor and parts they already put within it. I have never hear of such and wonder what I should do, people at work told me to bring a lawyer which I'm going to phone up tomorrow but I'm wondering is this common practice and what would ya'll do? BTW its a 1999 Crystler Concorde, which up until two weeks ago when It died on me the first time and they replaced the alternator and consequently this time, i've never had any problems out of.
