I just get back from the Mufflerman and they give me aquote of $400 to replace my muffler. Why am i not surprised. He pointed to rusted areas along the exhaust pipe and the muffler itself which are causing the popping and loud noise.
My question is, if it werent for the rust would the entire exhaust pipe and muffler still be functional? Or does the muffler in truth need replacing every 2 years regardless? Im lately wondering if there is some "anti-rust" matter i can apply to those key areas along the pipe and muffler (which can withstand sea, snow, salt, and heat) to prevent adjectives rusting and another $400 for a seemingly trivial part.

Mufflers do not hold to be replaced at any certain time interval, merely when they are damaged, and explicitly usually due to rust. So yes if the rust weren't there your exhust would be fine, and nearby are some exhuast repair kits that sometimes abet. Regular under sports car wash during the winter will back reduce the saline sitting on and around the exhaust (many car wash have this option), making sure the vehicle warm up even for short trips will help dampen moisture buildup inside the exhaust to reduce rusting from inside.
I know a fella whose Ford Crown Vic have to have the exhaust replaced every two years due to inside and outside rust problems. But he other went the lowest possible expensive replacement units.
