Gears hold their advantages and disadvantages. They are thought to provide more accurate valve timing, but it have been realize that they make fruitless harmonics, which can destroy the hardened finish on a flat tappet camshaft, and actially take down timing accuracy because of the effect of the harmonics on the entire valvetrain (springs, valve, etc...).

Answers:    Some lofty performance applications do this because it is smaller amount sloppy, more accurate. The degree's is if you want to advance the timing, but injudicious for street, as you could cause detonation. Also, timing gears will be much louder, sounds resembling a WHINE of a supercharger.
