I was told by a mechanic that the exhaust and muffler on my '96 windstar needs repairing. Could this be the rationale my check engine light is on? Also every so often the engine will rumble loudly. Is my beloved on it's later legs? Any suggestions?

I had an elder car once and the check engine light come on and come to find out, it was just a blemished oxygen sensor, nothing serious at all. And every mechanic surrounded by town pretty much told me my car was falling apart.
Answers: Besides the other advice you could take it to a muffler shop and own the catalytic converter tested to be sure it is functioning properly you might take it to a couple of muffler shops and ask for a free inspection before you pilfer it there lots of luck!!!

I don't know where on earth you live, but you need to call the local auto PARTS stores (not service centers) and ask them if they do free check engine lantern readings. If so, pull on surrounded by and they will tell you whats wrong. If you are able, or know someone who is competent to work on vehicles, you can get the parts while you are nearby and do it at home.
