I have a 1997 Pontiac Bonnieville. It basically had a topical (used) engine put in it. The check engine oil lamp stays on. Is this normal. Thanks.
Answers: No, this is not common. The CEL (Check Engine Light) only illuminate when there is an emission related problem. Being as your car is a 1996 or subsequent model year it will fail your state's emission test if that lighting is on. I would call some local auto parts stores and see who can scan the code(s) for free, some larger chains do this. They should also be capable of reset the code(s). After the code(s) are reset the light will move about away until the car's computer can re-test all the components again. Be sure to write down or remember the previous code(s) so if they return you will know what the problem is. A few straightforward checks that the car parts store guys can do is generate sure your gas cap is support, check your vacuum lines for leaks, and check you4r electrical connections within your engine. one thing you can do is to remember to not "top-off" your fuel reservoir. This fills your evaporative system beside fuel and throws an "evap" code with the CEL. Hope this help!
Normal...Not! Vehicle codes will need to be extracted and read to determine the concrete problem.
If the vehicle is running somewhat good it might be something simple...go and get it checked out asap.
