Trust me, Take it to auto zone and they will assessment it free, better safe then sorry..
Cheap fix? rock-hard to say. a check engine light could be anything. Pep boys can read the code, convey you what the problem is and how much the repair cost would be.

Oil transformation?

First of adjectives what make and model car do you hold. Check that cars site and see if that has been a adjectives problem in that car. B/c from my education, check engine lights don't come on for no reason. Don't ignore the problem. Take it to autozone and hold then read your codes, its free. If a code comes up, find out what it is and if its worth the trouble of repairing. Also, after that disconnect the battery for around 15 mins. to reset the computer, connect the cables, if that light comes on again and its duplicate code, its not the computer. If it comes on and its a different code it might be the computer. I'm jus showing you how to troubleshoot before you go wasting your money.

Answers:    Like the others said, if the Check Engine light is on and it's a post-1996 motor, then it has a standard code that can be read from the computer by any mechanic. The problem could be anything from a loose gas sunhat (happened to me!) to an engine which needs a complete rebuild. Get someone to read the code!
