Chevy 350 Vortec Ignition Timing?

How do you set the ignition timing on this engine ?
The marks on the intake wore when I cleaned it so I don't have any hint points . Is it true you can't use timing lights with the vortec engines ?

How long can I dance in need...

do this pull the number 1 spark plug and rotate the engine till its on TDC you can describe by sticking a soft wire or something in the hole to have a feeling where the piston is at.
Don't damage the piston by jamming something contained by the hole,
be easy while you feel it coming up
Once its at its peak point set the distributor on #1 plug on the cap.
If it doesn't start, you may be 180 degrees off( exhaust stroke instead of compression)
verbs the distributor and rotate the engine 360 degrees
The vortex's have a "window" of degree that it can be inside this window and adjust the timing to were it requirements to be
I dunno about the timing light, but you could nick the entire engine down to the camshaft and re-do the whole thing.

Basically, You cannot set timing is correct... But, turning the distributor serves only to adjust what GM call the cam retard offset. Actual ignition timing is controlled by the PCM, based on the information it receive from various input sensors. To adjust the cam retard offset, connect a scan tool to the DLC. Bring the engine to operating heat, then hold it steady at 1000 rpm. Monitor cam retard offset on the scan tool. It should be 0 2. To compensate for a gloomy reading, rotate the distributor in a counterclockwise direction, To compensate for a positive reading, rotate the distributor in a clockwise direction. Recheck the reading after tightening the hold-down bolt. It may rework. Also note that attempting to retard the cam retard offset reading outside the recommended list will not cure spark knock, and may cause the PCM to store a diagnostic trouble code.

There is a procedure that allows you to set the initial timing next to a light. After that the computer controls the timing. Refer to a repair manual in the region of this procedure under distributor replacement. I don't remember it right off the top of my director.
