The computer has separate "map" for engine start. And depending on the outside heat and engine temperature, it have more "map" for fuel, air and ignition timing.
Modern engines (with fuel injections and / or electronic ignitions) cannot work minus the computer. There are no mechanical backup that kick in if the computer breaks down. That's not to speak that there are no backup (ex: failed MAF sensor would be compensated by the RPM) but the computer is one section that has no backup surrounded by a car.

Not merely does a computer have "anything" to do next to starting a the car, minus the computer's involvement engines are very sturdy to start. Anybody who has started small engines (lawnmowers and secure saws) know that they are very difficult to start. That's because small engines do NOT own a computer to make fine adjustment in air/fuel/timing. So everything is at approximate.
