I have a 5 speed, Subaru WRX 2.0 turbo and tend to drive it (ahem) fairly quickly.
I use engine braking comparatively frequently, partly for the glorious nouns of the engine as it winds down from glorious rpm. Other than the obvious risk of over-revving the engine (which is well avoided), I'm worried I could be damaging the gearbox since it have started to balk when going from 2nd into 1st. Assuming it's wear on the synchros, is that just because of frequent tough acceleration or could downshifting into first at elevated engine rpm be contributing to the problem?
You should only use first gear for starting rotten - gears for go brakes for stop. As you predict, downshifting and letting the gears pocket the strain will wear out your gearbox extra quick - as your worn synchro shows. . The solitary time you should use engine braking is on steep hill descents - at least possible if you want your car engine and gear box to own a long life.

I beat my 85 CRX for 65k surrounded by barely 14 months. She stayed together during it adjectives but was falling apart nippy when I got rid of her.
you are wearing out gear box, shifting your gap on lifters, etc. If you are gung hoe on this driving, as I be. I'd at least up the gear box grease to higher point, change the filter too. As okay as put racing or a superior quality spring, lifters, etc since explicitly easy to do on top.
