Suddenly without any caution, I lost power from my car engine and it feel like it needed to stall.
I drove a mile home at a max of 20mph (it wouldn't go faster).
It is a classic MG Midget 1500. It have problems restarting - so I cleaned the carb, and it starts fine now, but nearby is a lot of engine jolting - certainly more than usual or make the acquaintance of. Any ideas what the problem could be, bearing, or something much worse?
Before you start tear into bearings and things similar to that, I'd check spark plugs, ignition points, coil, condenser and simple tune-up items, assuming nobody's changed it to a later electronic ignition system. Points sometimes go amiss and so do rotors, and distributor caps. These items are relatively cheap and any one of them can lead to misfiring, which on a four-cylinder engine, will cause a "unbroken lotta shakin' goin' on"...K ;o)
I am by no mechanism an expert, but my car did matching thing final week and it turned out to be a hole in the exhaust. This be causing a tightening in pressure and hence the paucity of power (wouldn't go above 40mph).
That would be my individual suggestion.
Well done for having an MG though. Nice cars!
Answers: I would say if you own a single carb that it would be the ignition system. check the plugs, and HT leads as these can go wrong over time so that along with the dirty carb would stop the engine and exhaust the power. A good check is to remove the plug lead one at a time and see if there is any progress to the vibration and the one that have no change is the problem.
