Front brakes squealing?

Is it true that brake pads have an indicator that squeals when the pad are getting low? I have a 2005 Forester with 42,000km on it, 60% city driving. As far as I know, the pad have never been changed.

No, not all pads hold the squealer indicators... you can check the pads with a flashlight to see if they are getting low..
Alloy wheel are nice because you can check your brakes by looking in the openings. If near is decent pad moved out, your in the clear, if it's getting thin, its time to take'er surrounded by.

For people with steel rims and hubcaps approaching me, then you can raise the saloon up with a jack and lower it on jack stands. Then crawl under and check your pad. When you get a feel for it, you can get behind the car gearstick and feel the brakes, but only if the brakes own cooled off. They get completely hot, very fast when braking.

Most auto repair shops will check your brakes for free.

Answers:    Not adjectives brake pads have "squealers" But at 42k and mostly city driving sounds similar to you may be due. Squealing is not always an indicator of a brake problem, how many times enjoy you ever heard a large trucks brake squeal--think they adjectives have bad brakes? Best bet is to own them inspected by a trusted technician.
