I have a 10 year old subaru that have a great heater, but yesterday it had a really discouraging smoke smell coming out of the vents in the holiday home and I had to open the window! I drove it today and it was fine! That was the merely time its ever done it!
Also I was starting out on a really sharp hill and I accedently reved it up to 4000 rpms while starting, it be also -3 degrees F at the time.
What could it be? Is there something I should get hold of looked at? If so how much would it cost? Thanks
could be a heater core leak...own a tech pressurize the coolant system and see if it leaks, and where.
Answers: May have been a tree walk off or other debris that got on the resister pack which are coils of cable that heat up when in use to lower the speed of the hanger-on to the desired out put.

the desperate smoke smell in the heater may be any something dusty (cotton like, like cotton candy usually form surrounded by the fans) in the heater coil or the follower motor.
beside that.. I don't believe something is wrong. Could be dust surrounded by the system that got burned when the heater heated up.
