I managed to get the drive shaft within on the right hand side but can not get the gone hand side in, no situation how hard I push or whack it...it just won't step in.please help!! any suggetions?

engineer sure the splines are lined up correctly
it needs a right "whack" with copper mallet or piece of wood ..never have any problems..check and perserve.
Answers: If its a re-conditioned gear box you will inevitability to check to make sure that the splined hole in the gear box is alike size as the splined shaft on the drive shaft.
If it the same, clean up the splines beside a flat file and lubricate it with copper grease.
