My engine light have been on for toyota corolla 2000 beside 120,000 miles. I am being charged $900 to replace the catalyc converter. Is that modest and necessary to slip away NY emissions.?

I would expect to wages half that amount since the converter itself is give or take a few $200 for the parts cost. However, you may need other exhaust parts and labor beyond the converter, and seller repair costs will be higher contained by general than independent garages. You must hold a converter to pass emission. Beware that if your check engine light indicates your engine is burning too much fuel (running "rich"), you must correct the problem past installing a new catalytic converter, or it may be diluted. Make sure your car is not covered by your manufacturer's emission warranty.
