Answers: Don't appropriate this the wrong way, but I don't regard that car is worth fixing. You might be better rotten getting another car.
A rich running engine can contribute to catalytic converter end, so I would first recheck my ignition tuneup, EGR emissions operation and any other motive for the engine misfiring. Of course the engine could be misfiring either too lean or too rich. One sudden way to achieve an idea how powerfully the engine is running is to look at the tips of the old spark plugs removed from the engine and "read" them contained by the Autolite chart below. Your due for new spark plug wires if they've never be replaced, and bad wires can burn out the ignition coils and ignition module.
If your engine shakes and shutters (misfires) on complex acceleration going up a steep hill, to be precise a symptom of a misfire which could be due to bad wires and plugs. That will incentive your knock sensor to retard the spark timing and you'll lose engine power dramatically. Of course a bad catalytic converter will also bring a dramatic loss of engine power.
