Is it my alternator? Pontiac '88 Grand Prix...?

Car didn't start, got a jump and the tow truck driver tested the alternator and said he thought the alternator be fine, it was just a late battery. Got the battery replaced today (and so far its running fine and starting up fine) and the auto store tested the starter and alternator. Auto store said that the alternator be putting out 4 Amps and that this was not enough to maintain the battery charged. So is it the alternator?
If it is, how much can I expect to pay to enjoy the alternator replaced?

The alternator is what keeps the battery charged. If you replaced the battery-operated, it's gonna run fine until the battery dies again. If the auto store said 4amps is not enough to charge the freestyle, then the alternator should be replaced.

The price depends on the car and installation. I don't know what it would cost for a august prix but my dad replaced mine so we only paid $60 for the portion. It could be another $100 depending on where you go to carry it installed. The auto shop wanted to charge us another $200 is why my dad did it himself.

I would bear the vehicle to another auto store and have them recheck the alternator to see if the info is consistant with the previous check. If it is consistant replace the alternator. Also hold in mind that the battery and freestyle terminals have to be verbs to extend the life of the battery.

Alternator is the problem.

The Delco Alternators can fail surrounded by such a way that they will test righteous in nearly every test. But will drain the mobile overnight. I've seen this a couple of times. Very difficult to diagnose until I discovered this about Delco alternators.

Pricing will gamut from about $90 - $150 for a re-manufactured alternator. Figure about 1 hour labor (a) roughly speaking $75 - $100 per hour.

No, I don't trust those guys at the stores that check it for you. They will try to provide you a bunch of excess bullcrap that you don't need. Buy a voltage meter and do what Country Boy said!

BTW-amps and volts are classified differently, and the guy was trying to verbs you. Don't buy into it. A battery needs a volt meter, not an amp one.

Answers:    Amp output tells nothing. Alternators are checked beside volt meters. Sears, Lowes, Radio Shack Home Depot auto-parts stores all have inexpensive ones for $20.00 or smaller amount. Every household should have one. Simply hook yo the red lead to the positive terminal on the mobile and the black wire to the ground terminal. Set the meter to 20V. Start the car. The meter should be reading 13.5 - 14.0 volts to preserve the battery fully charged . Anything less than 13.5 remove the refusal terminal from the battery and remove the alternator.

AC Delco re-manufactured alternators are warranted for the duration of your car. Evert part inside the outer frame is brand bright. The aluminum frame on the outside is the only parts that's reused.
