Is this mechanic trying to screw me?

I failed emissions on my inspection. I took it to a shop and he's relating me my vaccuum switch to my EGR is completely broken and that he needs to replace it and re carbon (or something like that) the system and retest emission again to make sure everything checks out. He said it could be the problem, but he's not sure. He quoted me 300. Does this sound right?

Normally the emission test is to be sure that you tune your car up regularly and aren't burning grease. About the only thing that really wear out on engines anymore is the spark plugs, because they are in fire and literally burn up. A tuneup should replace them and their wires, too. My Civic went 240,000 miles, my Tercel go 136,000, Corolla went 140,000, my Hyundai and Kia have gone 90,000 miles near just tuneups, and absolutely no problems within the emissions systems except for a loose gas cap (which poor me once--I was just fortunate ample to have an honest mechanic that told me what the problem was, turned rotten my "check engine" light, told me to drive 50 miles and come back--and everything was fine. The emission system is complicated but usually trouble-free.

When was the last time you tuned the vehicle up? They requirement it every 25,000-30,000 miles. If you can't remember, it probably needs it. It's important for your catalytic converter, too, because if it isn't burning the fuel neatly (which fails emissions) the extra unburned emissions overwork the cat. conv. cause it to overheat and melt and block your exhaust--stopping the car.

I'd try a tuneup first, you probably inevitability it anyway. But whatever you do, get two or three opinion first, and price quotes, like you already did. Good going! He might be right, but it sounds like a long shot to me.

Answers:    Emissions is a complicated issue now, and without knowing what kind of coup¨¦ you have, I cant tell you for sure, BUT, if the EGR vacuum switch is broken on stopped, then yes it has to be replaced. As for de-carbonizing the engine (fancy occupancy for cleaning the EGR passages most likely), it wil help you out. $300? Not discouraging, get another estimate or two though, from reputable shops in your nouns, then for kicks phone up your local dealership and get them to quote you a price...
