My Mazda 929 1990 has had tons problems with the idle - it use to be idle at a stop light and engine will shut off and no check engine or anything and it would start wager on up fine, i deal with it by revving the engine at the stop flimsy but cleaning the Mass air flow sensor and the idle control tap and there are no vacuum leaks. Im pulling out my pelt trying to figure it out and took it to 3 Technicians and spent 1000 $ to let them poke at it but none of them fix anything one told it still stalled out after he replaced the O2 sensor. Its not the catalytic converter because it be removed when the first owner had it. I tried everything form Techs to Voodoo?!?!?!?! Please Help me figure this out, i approaching this car and don't want to get rid of it because it get good gas milage.

Answers: Hi,
I own a 89 mazda 929, beautiful saloon by the way. Ive also got problems near my idle.
With mine it revs at around 2000rpm when you start it up in the morning and take a while to come down to around 700rpm.
I took it down to my mechanic and he hooked the computer diagnostics up to it and told me that the computer has found a fault beside the idle sensor.
Firstly, is yours the 18 valve engine or the 24 Valve engine?
if yours is the 18 stopcock version have a look lower than the hood ontop of the intake pipe that leads from the intake box to the throttle mechanism. on the other side of the throttle is a sensor which should read something approaching:
Mazda
JF01 18 911
198500 - 0250
Denso Japan
many mechanics believe that this sensor is reliable and so fourth but reality is that they sometimes break down. I would be fondness more towards this sensor being the answer to the problems you described because this sensor can do quirky things when it is malfuntioning
Take the car down to a mechanic and find him to link his computer up with the diagnostics cable which is tucked away beneath the cruise control box.
Your computer will have stored the fault into its memory and when he links his computer to it it will display the shortcoming
Just out of curiosity, is yours the pillarless version or the sedan version.
Best of luck resolving the problem.
