My sports car keep stalling.?

I have a 1990 Ford Festiva.
The past week it have been -30. One morning I was postponed for school so I tried starting my car instead of taking the bus and it wouldn't start. (It wasn't plugged in).
Now that it's space heater, it starts, but it keeps stalling. When the gas is floored in first gear it get up to about 25 k but as soon as I change into second gear the sports car loses its power and stalls if I'm not careful. Having it plugged in made no difference.
The other point is that something smells. Whatever it is smells somewhat burnt.
My fiance's car is also have the same problem (but not the smell). I was wondering if it have anything to do with the cold weather and if I wrecked it somehow by trying to start it.
If anyone has have a similar problem and has an idea of what to do, that would be wonderful.
Thanks!

What I think is that you are have problems with the ignitions parts ( such as rotor cap may be wires) that usually happen on cold weather. My second thought is a sensor ( MAP sensor, throttle position sensor ) about the smell I am thinking about the clutch. You may involve a new one. When you try to shift from 1-2 in stead the vehicle going, it wil go down. ( it won;t go) but it should not turn off. Sorry it is really rock-hard to tell you what the problem is.

Ford Focus coolant pump press?

if the two problems are anyway related it would penny-pinching that you both get gas at the same location and that gas is discouraging. but sheesh negative thirty that is cold where on earth are you so i dont accidently move there! i suspect water contained by the gas.

Which one should i save? ...

Answers:    You may hold a crack in the engine block or a blown head gasket. Give it a compression check and when they are doing that they would smoothly see the condition of the spark plugs since you have to take them out first to do the compression check. If you don't flush your anti-freeze as habitually as it says your supposed to or perform the critical oil changes as stated within your owners manual in the glove box afterwards this type of damage may occur. Unfortunately the fix is not cheap. You could be looking at a unusual engine or a new car.

Try the easiest solutions first. If both of your cars are doing matching thing, are you filling at matching gas station? When it is that cold any H2O in your tank make a car run bad. Try Iso-HEET fuel stabilizer. (It is about a $1.50 at Walmart) This is a form of alcohol that will dry your fuel.
