I drive a 94 Volvo 960 4 dr sedan. It only gets hot when I stop. what could be the problem? thermostat conceivably?
Chance is your first guess is right, The thermostat is stuck cause the coolent to expand in to the reservoir. Or if your cooling fan(s) are electric then the fan or the senser is not working. you must have adequate collent or there wouldnt be any going in the reservoir.
I agree near the other answer {danie} you need to check your cooling fan. A little trick to try is to turn on your AC and turn your switch to the defroster mode this will see the AC cooling fan on and help save the engine cool.
ego try the tstat first.also be sure the fan works.
Answers: thermostat is stuck , electric fan (or clutch) may be inoperative , or the blades of your water pump conceivably worn.
When cars are in colder climates the anti freeze can be a slushy mix and will eat your dampen pump blades down, yet the pump wont leak.

check fluid for both crowd and strength. then move to thermo stat and or a colapsed hose. last is flush and pressure check your rad

Also, if you engine overheats, you should change your engine grease. The extreme temperatures during an overheat can damage the grease, and lead to engine damage.

I would check the radiator first. Start the engine and wait until it gets melt not hot. Feel the radiator and make sure it feels thaw top to bottom. You might have restricted radiator. It is real straightforward to check your thermostat. Simply remove it and start your engine. If the engine does't get hot you found the problem. If this checks out alright your water pump might not be pumping dampen.Anyone own an extended warranty from Honda...

If it only get hot when you stop, I'd check that the cooling fans are running. When you are stopped there's no air going through the radiator. If the supporter or fans aren't working, the engine will overheat! Also, if you engine overheats, you should change your engine grease. The extreme temperatures during an overheat can damage the grease, and lead to engine damage.
