Always hang on to the heater on as an indicator, when the warmth gets cold, you are greatly low on water..
you can do this until you take it fixed.
also Undoing the cap will hold the 14psi (or so) of pressure out of your cooling system, so it wont "squeeze" the coolant out of the radiator. It isnt summer, so you arent going to overheat if your heater is still putting out thaw air!
