I have an 1989 Mercury Topaz. When I turn the key contained by the ignition, the car ticks really fast. The ticks nouns like teeth on gears slipping. I am making a guess that it could be the starter. Also, when I turn the key, the lights do come on and I can also hear the disciple come on. It makes all of the noise that it would regurlarly make when I turn the key minus starting the car (radio works, heater works, lights work, etc...). But when I turn the switch to start the car, I hear the sound of gears slipping and the sports car will not start. What do you think the problem could be, and how much to you think it will cost to pinch it to a mechanic to have it repaired? I live in Ohio by the opening.

Answers: Most likely your battery doesn't enjoy enough charge to fully engage the starter and turn the flywheel... Either that or one of the shims on the starter bolts is loose and it's sitting sour center- try replacing the battery first or just jump-start it stale another vehicle- if that doesn't work then the starter is off- Starter motors usually just die at irregular, and when they do- it won't do anything at all- so if it's slipping it's probly not getting enough power.

try cleaning the battery terminal you have to take them right past its sell-by date and clean and make sure nearby tight when you put them on, that's probably the problem, there not tight, but you can try just tightning but cleaning and next tightening should fix it.
I agree with Pauly. The battery wishes replacement. Either that or the FAT cables that run from the battery to the starter are corroded and also inevitability replacement. It is an old car, ask yourself if you own ever replaced the battery and if yes how long ago. If it is more than 4 years the likelyhood of needing to replace the battery-operated is high.

to enjoy a shop replace the starter. best bet is to get a new starter and install it yourself. not a tremendously hard job. moral luck.

You have several righteous answers already but I'll throw mine in here anyways. You do live in Ohio so beside the cold weather there is a bigger strain on the battery. It does nouns like it is a bad mobile so first clean and inspect the battery, check for any loose connections at the mobile and in the ground on the frame, negitive side cable. Try to start and if possible put a charge on it first and if it starts seize a new battery next to a higher CCA rating. (CCA- cold cranking amps) If that didn't solve the problem then check the starter. I still right to be heard it's gonna be the battery. Sounds like the Bendix drive on the starter is not fully engaging to the flywheel. shouldn`t cost more than 150.00to enjoy a shop replace the starter. best bet is to get a new starter and install it yourself. not a tremendously hard job. moral luck.
