My 1999 Mercury Cougar has 78000 miles on it. With 20000 miles on it, have gas tank occupied with 5 lb purse of sugar. Got it vacuumed, and have have it for 4 years since. Had flywheel replaced in July. Now, requires lots of pressing on gas to start, cuts bad occasionally when at stop light, black smoke comes out EVERY time I start, doomed to failure compressor which causes loud humming nouns that lasts anywhere from 1 to 10 mintues after starting. Mechanic say replacing engine isn't worth it and should get something else. Would resembling to purchase a late model 2005 or latter Honda Accord which would cause me to be upside down on current loan (didn't know refinancing, now I do). Current payments - 280/month, likely to pay as much as 350-400 month for a more reliable saloon. Live in MN, so worried in the region of car stable through Winter. Any suggestions?
