I'm getting a new car tomorrow and the encyclopaedia says not to drive at constant speeds for the first 200 miles, and to break gently.
I also read online that you should avoid pushing the vehicle for the first 1000 miles. Does that mean that I can't really go on the highway for the first 200 miles? Does it niggardly that I should be very gentle on the highway? What in the order of the fact that I can't drive at constant speeds? Should I drive 55 --> 75 --> 55 --> 75? Or should I never exceed 55 for the first 1000 miles?
I'd like to drive up to my sister's to show her the sports car, but that's about 80 miles each channel (by highway). Should I avoid doing that until I've driven the first 200 miles?

Answers: Usually the break-in period is 1,200 miles. The reason that they ask that you not travel at the same speed for long periods of time is that they don't want the internal works(seals and bearings) to wear out prematurely. They requirement to be worn at all different speeds to protect the internal parts of the engine. What they mean is do not drive for two hours at 55 on cruise control. Every 15 minutes or so you should increase or condense the speed by 5 MPH.
Braking gently will insure that you get even wear on the disks.

the single most critical thing is to change the grease and replace the break-in thin oil i.e. used at the beginning. all that speed stuff is bs.
other then that do the speed margins, avoid the highway for long distances and dont let the rpm's go over 3500 IMO

You got it figured out. Just don't do a steady speed, you can get moving but don't hot rod it.Most importantly, you should change your oil and filter at 500 miles and 1000 miles.
