OiL MOUNT HOUSING?

I have a 97 BMW 7 Series. I always see grease residue and drops of oil in and around the grease housing mount. I tightened the top cap which sits atop the oil filter and it's rock solid tight. Is it run of the mill to keep on seeing bits of oil on the external portion of the housing mount?

Check to see if the gasket wants replaced. If it's not the problem, then the mating surfaces may be undermined or warped and need re-surfaced. Or, you could even own one bolt stripped out just enough to bring a leak on the housing.

Answers:    You are chitchat about a canister filter, not a spin-on correct?
If so, there are 3 rubber o-rings or gaskets that come near new filter. If any or all of those are cracked, pinched or overtightened they will percolate. You need to remove canister & examine the gasket (a) the base of canister & the o-ring (a) top of retaining bolt. If damaged-replace. If not, wipe verbs & oil it liberally & re-install. That, when done correctly, will resolve the problem.
