A couple of weeks ago I did something stupid and drove for a good 5+ minutes with my parking brake on. I haven't have any problems until I used the parking brake again last night. Suddenly when I turned the brake past its sell-by date and started driving, the car started making a loud grinding/rattling sound contained by the back end of the drivers side. I really don't know much in the order of cars but can anyone suggest what the problem may be? I am assuming there is a problem with the brakes but I'm really hoping it something thats not going to cost me abundantly of money :(
Should I bring it to a mechanic ASAP?

Take it in asap the rear shoes are predictable gone. waiting will only increase cost to replace more damaged parts
You may have overheated or cracked a brake shoe or there may be excessive brake dust,i recommend find a place that offer a free brake inspection and have it checked out it could only attain worse. You own probably crystalized your brakes from the heat and friction from being busy. Safe thing is to have it checked, should cost anywhere from $75.00 to $200.00.
sounds close to the brake didnt release, get it checked out, look around and find a place that does free inspections. they will check it out and then if it wishes fixn then theyll do that too.

Answers: I think you are going to enjoy to go to a mechanic. She, (or he), will drive the car to verify the thud and braking. The next step is to remove the rear wheel and drums and inspect for damage. What is likely is that driving next to the brake on overheated the brake shoes. (the parking brake applies the rear brake shoes by using a cable). The brake linings are glue to the metal shoe and excess heat can cause them to separate. Once separated, the inside layer can move out of position and cause other parts to come loose. The sound you report could be the metal of the shoe contacting the drum or other parts such as springs or the adjuster rubbing the drum. The repair might not be too costly at this point. Continued driving lacking checking will only get more expensive. If you do not seize the answer you need here, you can go to my website: trustywrench.com and ask again. I can budge into more detail there. Good luck, and don't feel fruitless, this happens fairly recurrently.

Just go to a shop that will check the brakes--it is not a big deal--the cable might have tightened next to the heat that built up--there isn't any reason to avoid a shop visit--it will merely get worse.
