Petrol rate - a bit pessimistic?

Hi. I have a p-reg Vauxhall Astra and have notice something funny with the petrol gauge. If I saturate the tank to overflowing, the marker on the dial say it's not full. Similarly, when the marker says my reservoir is empty it's not, and I can carry on driving for ages until the standard lamp even comes on ( 50 miles at least ). It seems approaching the marker is always only just a few milimetres below where it should be. Any ideas on how to fix, or reset the dial?

If its the gauge you normally take constantly showing FULL or constantly showing EMPTY.

It's any a bad sending unit contained by the tank, a bad ground at the sending part, or a bad gauge. If you want it fixed in need throwing parts at it go to the dealer.

To fix the problem lastingly you would have to replace the in-tank sensor. However I had this problem on a motor I had years ago and ever since then I hold never relied on the gauge for accurate measurement. Each time I cram up I simply reset the odometer trip to zero. When the mileage reads approx. 200 which is usually 1/2 a container, depending on the car, I refill near petrol. The vehicle had the problem with be an Opel Rekord - Same family as the Astra, I now drive an Omega, again same loved ones as the Astra, Fuel gauge is reasonably accurate, but I still don,t trust it.

Answers:    Sounds resembling you need to replace the float switch in the fuel reservoir. Its not a difficult job to do if you know how to do it, however as you will be working in the fuel system it would be better to bring back a garage to do it for you.
Ja.
