It is impossible for gasoline and diesel prices to get too big. While it may be more than you want to spend, or more than you can afford to spend, remember that necessity is the mother of invention. The price of gasoline and diesel is now high-ranking enough that alternatives are profitable, and should be available soon. As more relatives buy the alternative fuels and cars, the price of these alternative will go down. Eventually, any the price of gas and diesel come down, or they become obsolete. That is supply and constraint.
We tried regulating fuel prices in this country up to that time. In case you are too childish to remember, the prices still rose faster than the rate of inflation, and there be gas shortages, where you could not buy gasoline at any price. Surely you would not want to jump back to that?
When you've get grand kids you'll be recounting them stories about the days when every gas station have fuel available, and it was solely $3 per gallon, and the U.S. was the most powerful country instead of China.
