Retrieving codes next to a paperclip?

on a 94 Firebird? it is OBD-I and has that 16 pin connector like other GM OBD-I cars do.
I be able to retrieve codes with a paperclip on my 88 Corsica, but not this firebird...Is at hand a different trick, like turning the ignition on and off 3 times similar to you do with Chrysler products, or 8 times like the Ford Keyfob code reset?

autozone will read them for free.. I only did it with them.. to reset just unhook freestyle for 20 seconds

there should be no trick. could be possible though that it is obd2 as I have a 94 buick that was that way, but it have an obd1 plug. take it by autozone, they will pull the code for free.

Answers:    Hello! In response to one of the answers, I tried to gain codes read on my mother's Mercury, and at least in our nouns, the Autozone and Advance Auto stores can only read cars from 1996 and newer. Haven't a clue how to do it yourself. Sounds interesting.
