I have 1996 grand am, I requirement a new rotor and new brake pad. I took it to a mechanic today and he said I don't need them replaced right now..but eventually. So my sound out is, about how much will a new rotor and brake pad cost? He said it'd be 150$ with labor and everything. Would it be easy to do yourself? I enjoy a brother who knows a lot in the region of cars and said he'd be able to do this. How much would the parts cost if I done it myself? Also, lately when I drive my car for a while (about 30 minutes) it will start to label a grinding noise when I turn..would the bad rotor and brake pad be what's causing this noise? the mechanic said I have metal or something of the sort sticking out near my brakes...probably from the brake pads? thx.
That sounds like a reasonable price, however if you needed to save at least 50 bucks you can find the stuff your self at Autozone and install the rotors and pads your self. Its a pretty simple job if your by design inclined. The main thing you would entail is a tool to push the calipers piston back in, which by the mode if you do, make sure your master cylinder lid is off! You can price the parts at autozone.com
the $150.00 is an awesome price for parts and labor. I'd have the mechanic do it. Also the answer to your other cross-examine is yes, that's probably whats causing the noise 150 bucks is cheap i worked for a brake shop for 6 years and the price for us to do it was about 25 or 30 bucks more. you can do it yourself for nearly 50 bucks if you go with a wagner mx type wipe and new rotors but before i replaced the rotors i would hold them miked for proper machining clearance. If they can be machined all your out is 30 bucks for the pads and 10 bucks to enjoy them machined.
$47-$86 + tax at AutoZone in my nouns of the woods, for pads and both rotors depending on quality.

Answers: Normally, if near is any noise while turning, it is caused by the CV axle. The boot may be ripped on any the inner or outer joint. If this is the case after the grease has escaped and the joint is going doomed to failure because of lack of lubricant.
As far as the pads and rotors walk, I would suggest replacing both rotors at the same time. This will allow everything to wear at the same rate. Rotors are cheap for that saloon because they were used on many of matching type of car like splendid prix and Chevy cavalier. Literally a dime a dozen type of car. Look at a price between 16 and 22 dollars per rotor. As far as the pads be in motion. Don't go with the cheap ones. We are chitchat about a 2500 lb vehicle stopping. Still, you are looking at about 35 dollars for the set of four pad for the front. Two pads per side.

if the pad and rotor is bad, you should hear it only when you push the brake. you said you hear it when you bring in a turn, that could be a bad cv joint, but if your going to modification the rotor and brake pads, your looking around $100.00, get your brother to do it and amass yourself some bucks.

As for the crash I assume its the brake pad wear indicators, little tabs of metal that rub on the rotors when the pad are warn down to a minimum thickness.
