i have shaved my tailgate and gas tank explicitly not used... so i should be able to sand down the explain paint to a faded color and paint right... and if so if there is some bare metal spots throught the tailgate etc.. will this effect the outcome
The best and easiest way is to wet sand the paint near 400-600 grit wet sandpaper. Only sand in a straight queue, do not go in circles as it will show latter. Next you want to use metal conditioner on any bare metal areas to etch the metal and get rid of any standard lamp rust. Bare metal will rust very quickly if in that is any humidity.
Next you want to prime the area. Using a two part primer is best as it will in truth harden. Using a spray can of primer is a mistake, too light and imprudent if you want a good job. I approaching to use a 2K primer from a auto paint store, many brands work well, call in your local paint shop. Two to three good coats should be sufficient, agree to dry. Then spray a mist coat of a contrasting color before wet sand. This will show the areas that need to be sanded more. I use 220 grit for the first coat, consequently prime again and final sand with 400-600 grit wet sand broadsheet. This will give a very smooth surface.
Don't forget, if the body work is impossible, even the best paint job will look bad. Take the time to do it right or own somebody else to it for you.
Wash off good and blow rotten real good next to air hose concentrating around moldings and trim to clean out ably, this will help keep dirt and dust out of the paint available job.
Now you are ready for paint.
