81 cadillac deville, idles just fine ,but when put into gear, rust drops to the point of dying when the accelerater is pressed.
Any ideas for a solution
Check the throttle postition sensor.
Nice car.
It's probably not the model or the car but the engine or the ignition that have a problem.

do a compression test to see if the engine is firing on all cylinders...you may own a bad engine. Or it could be a simple carb problem, ie re-build the carb. Have you been notice blue smoke before this? If so, that's a sign of burning oil and routine the engine is shot. Black smoke upon starting means a bad carb or choke, and a carb start again should fix that. I'm guessing its a bad engine but hopefully I'm wrong!
Answers: Well, there could be a couple of things. If it only just kicks out when you push on the throttle, it could be the timing is a little rotten. It will be just fine at lower rpms (like idling) but when you give it the gas, it adjectives gets flustered up. If it is not that at all, I would speak check your fuel filters first and if nothing is wrong next to those, the fuel pump because it can be a fuel delivery problem or a fuel mixture problem. It all depends on what you hear when it starts to "die". If you start audible range a rattle or clunk from the side of your engine, timing, if you dont hear rattles or clunks, it is most predictable fuel delivery. If it was the TPS, your vehicle at idle would not be fine. One last thought... If it is carbourated, and happen to have an electric choke, cadillac had a problem next to those when they were first introduced around that time, so your car could only just be choking out! Id say start with the small stuff, specially if you hear that clunk at adjectives. No clnk/clinking noises, you're good its not timing or anything that is to say causing the bogging. Best bet, check your choke cause those caddy's be notorius for that around the time they introduced those electronic chokes.
