Do you have a powered speedo with a cable to the tranny or an electronic one? If you hold a cable, sounds like it twisted around and stuck. You're going to enjoy to take it past its sell-by date to check it out. If you have an electronic speedo, hook up a code reader and see what it say. You've got a doomed to failure sensor.
