I have a really bleak sqealing noise from my engine sound. It's really high pitched and can become VERY loud at times. It individual starts after about 7 - 10miles of driving. It's at it's loudest at stand still and eases past its sell-by date when accelarating until it eventually stops at about 2500rpm. I own taken it to a couple of garages and they can't seem to find where on earth it is coming from. The car have just have a full service. It is a 1999 BMW E36 316i Compact 1895cc.
The noise doesn't progress pitch or volume when turning the steering wheel or dipping the clutch. The saloon does not have nouns conditioning. The belts have not be replaced but have have a brief check and sprayed with grease as a quick check, so although it still perchance the belt it is unlikely.
Any ideas of what it could be would be great! Thanks!
Answers: Water pumps squeal when they get hold of old - as you drive the force of the belt turning the pump take it beyond the squealing point - so it stops squealing.
