My '93 Grand Am V6 SE (183k miles) is making a strange knocking crash. I have taken the Serpentine belt rotten and determined that it is coming from the crankshaft wheel. The vehicle is well maintain; regular oil change, tune ups, etc. The noise seem to get smaller amount noticeable when the Air conditioner is running or i put the motor in dull, also it doesn't appear to be there when driving at a speed of 30 mph or highly developed, but comes back as soon as I stop. Has anyone else experienced this and know what could be causing it?
Answers: Red77 is correct it's call a harmonic balancer and it is breaking up and causing the rumbling. all you enjoy to do is replace what you would call the crankshaft pulley.
if my suspecions are correct you might enjoy to start to shop around for new motor or a new motor. this could be a spun crankshaft deportment or rods are starting to knock. try using a thick grease next time you do an grease change similar to 10W 40. its a high mileage engine and it probably of late needs a re viscous grease
