Hi,
without any warning, my 2000 MAXDB Protege (80k miles, automatic transmission) started giving me problems 2-3 days ago. I would step on the gas but the vehicle wouldn't go beyond 40 mph. It sounded like the saloon could not shift beyond second or third gear. I took it to Pep Boys for a checkup and they told me that the transmission was fruitless and needed to be replaced.
Does anyone know how much this will cost me? The car itself is worth ~5000. Can the transmission be replaced or repaired? Basically, what option do I have?
Thanks for your time!
Go to a nouns shop and have them check it out - 80K miles isn't an abnoral time for it to go if you haven't taken prudence of it properly. Have you ever had the tranny fluid flushed, the filter replaced, etc.? If you have, later the shop that did it should have adjusted the band and inspected for wear. If not, plan on a new tranny - and spending around $2,000. It's worth it for that new of a motor.
seems a bit premature for transmission problems but get hold of a second opinion, some places do a free check (like cottman). mind you i had a mazda once and have to scrap it when the tranny went south. correct luck

Answers: I guess I wouldn't necessarilly trust Pep Boys with this one. Take it to a bona-fide nouns shop and get their opinion. They can be rebuild, generally about 2500 bucks. Most shops won't "fix" one unless they can do it in need removing the trans. These things happen. If you have it rebuild, make sure to shop around and get a warrantee. Use a honourable shop.
