First off, thankfulness so much for any help. I enjoy a 1998 Saturn SL2 5spd w/ 120k mi. Recently I began have trouble getting it into gear. When the engine is off it is other easy to shift into adjectives the gears. When the engine is on sometimes it is really hard shift into gear(especially first). I've noted:
1. With the engine running and the clutch fully depressed within is no noticable change(even slight) in rot speed if I move the shifter from first to neutral.
2. If I sit on height ground with the motor in first gear and the clutch fully depressed and rev the engine the vehicle doesn't start to pull at all(creep try-out.)
3. If I rev the engine and then press the clutch it is even harder to draw from into gear.
4. If I accelerate briskly once in gear the coup¨¦ doesn't "slip."
I don't know a lot roughly speaking clutches and transmissions, but to me it seems that if it isn't slipping the clutch plates aren't worn out. Does this vehicle have a hydraulic clutch system that I could attach fluid to/bleed? Thanks
i have a 95 saturn sl2 also and mine have trouble shifting, on hills its shifts up to 3 times , and rev's up material high they probably in recent times have a doomed to failure transmittion or it just get worn out easily, mine is a automatic .
If it "pulls" OK but only unyielding to shift when the engine is running most likely it is low on fluid or the clutch have a mechanical problem which will require replacement.
Pop the hood and look for the resevoir i.e. not for the brakes on the drivers side of the firewall. It should be about 3/4 full of BRAKE FLUID. If it's essential empty next that's the problem. It has a leach in any the clutch master cyl or slave cyl. or both.
If it's low I'd rec. replacing both the master and slave, not that hard to do by yourself or if you know someone "mechanical".
FIND directions on how to bleed it online or here once you gain that far.
If it's full, get all set for a substantial bill.
Answers: What about clutch consistency or free play?? Clutch should have approx.. 1.5" of free play when clutch pedal is fully disengaged. Does the clutch absorb too early (close to floor board) if yes it sounds approaching you may have a hydraulic problem. Check fluid plane close to the brake master cylinder (small reservoir) but looks similar. If low you possibly have any a leak contained by: clutch master cyl., clutch slave cylinder.
