My friend is stranded on rt. 80. His rpms started racing, no resistance on the gas pedal, smoke from the engine..now there's grease all over. what does that sound approaching? He doesn't want to start the engine again, so that he doesn't cause more damage.
Sounds like the throttle get stuck or the butterfly in the carb. Probably gummed up carbon. My car have done this a few months ago, possible need this little motor by the carb. I am assuming that its a throttle body by the way. I forgot the entitle of the darn motor. Anyways, sounds like the damaged have beed done though. Sounds like a blow engine now.

Accelerator return spring broke, throttle went wide start, motor red lined and a rod probably went through the side of the motor. Look for holes surrounded by the block. I doubt if the motor will run and if you crank it over it either will knock loud or be locked up. Might as well try starting it for a moment to see if it's blown.

Answers: sounds approaching the throttle stuck wide open. Was he getting on the freeway when it happen? If there is oil everywhere, he probably lost the motor. I would check the throttle. If you can remove the atmosphere cleaner or air intake to check the butterfly and make sure its closed. If its not, afterwards something has got the throttle stuck general open. That needs to be address first and fore most.
